Wildlife We Help With
Most of our wildlife calls come from a handful of animals. Here are the ones people ask us about most.
Squirrels. By far the animal we hear about most. They get into attics through gaps in soffits, roof edges and vents. Most people notice scratching or running overhead, often in the morning. They chew wiring and insulation, which makes them more than a noise problem. Squirrel Control
Skunks. Usually under decks, sheds, porches and front steps. Most people smell them before they see them, or their dog gets sprayed. Skunk Control
Bats. They roost in attics, soffits, covered porches and above parkade doors. Bats are protected, so timing matters. We get the most calls in July and August to remove bats.
Raccoons. They den in attics, chimneys, crawl spaces and under decks. You’ll usually hear heavy thumping at night, and in spring, chirping from babies. Raccoon Control
Porcupines. They turn up under decks and in yard trees. People often ask us to move them away from the yard, especially when a dog could get quilled. Porcupine Control
Woodpeckers. They peck holes in stucco, siding and trim, sometimes dozens of them. Woodpeckers are protected birds, so the fix is usually deterrents and repairs. See Bird Control.
Coyotes and foxes. People ask us to keep them out of yards and to close off decks and sheds they’ve denned under, mostly where there are small pets.
Something else? Groundhogs, muskrats, badgers and other animals turn up too. Tell us what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you if we can help.
Signs You Have Wildlife Problems
Wild animals are good at staying out of sight. The signs are usually what you hear, smell or find. Look for:
- Scratching, thumping, running or chirping in the attic or walls, especially at dawn, dusk or night.
- Torn soffits, vent covers, shingles or fascia, or new holes in siding or stucco.
- A strong skunk smell around the deck, shed, porch or front steps.
- Droppings, urine stains on ceilings or a musty smell in the attic.
- Dirt, mounds or dug-out spots around the foundation, deck or shed.
- Chewed wires, wood or insulation.
- Bats flying out near the roofline at dusk, or droppings below an overhang.
- Overturned bins or raided bird feeders.
- A pet that’s been sprayed, quilled or keeps barking at the same spot.
Where Do Wild Animals Live and Hide?
Animals look for warm, dry, quiet spots away from predators and the weather.
- Attics, soffits, vents, and roof edges that lead to them.
- Chimneys without a cap.
- Under decks, porches, front steps and sheds.
- Crawl spaces and wall voids.
- Garages, parkades and covered porches.
- Gaps in siding, stucco and trim.
- Tree cavities, brush piles and wood piles.
- Ravines, river valleys and green space near your property.
When Are Wild Animals Most Active?
Most wildlife calls occur between May and September. Calling early in the season gives you more options. Wildlife calls follow the seasons.
- Late winter to early spring: Skunks are mating, and females look for a den. Squirrels and raccoons start scouting nesting spots.
- Late spring and summer: Babies are born in attics, under decks and in walls. This is our busiest time, and bats are most noticeable in July and August.
- Fall: Animals look for a warm place to spend the winter, and squirrels move in.
- Winter: We get fewer calls, but animals already denned in your attic stay put and keep causing damage.
Why Do I Have Wildlife on My Property?
Animals come for shelter and food. Here’s what we see most often in Alberta:
- Easy ways in. Loose vents, torn soffits, damaged roof edges, open chimneys and gaps in siding.
- Food. Open garbage, compost, bird feeders, pet food outside, gardens and fruit trees.
- A neighbour feeding wildlife, which draws squirrels and others to the whole block.
- A route to your roof. A tree branch, fence or deck that leads right to the roofline.
- Quiet, hidden space under decks, sheds, porches and steps.
- Nearby green space. Homes close to ravines and river valleys see more wildlife.
How Worried Should I Be About Wildlife?
It depends on the animal, but the longer it stays, the worse it gets.
Health: Most wild animals avoid people, but they can bite or scratch if cornered, especially a mother with babies. Droppings and urine can carry parasites and bacteria, so don’t handle them without protection. If a pet is bitten, sprayed or quilled, call your vet. Any bite or scratch from a wild animal needs medical attention.
Property damage: Animals tear up insulation, chew wiring, rip soffits and roofing and leave urine and droppings behind. Chewed wiring is a fire risk. Animals digging under decks and sheds can undermine them.
How fast it escalates: Quickly. In spring and summer, a single animal can turn into a family in your attic.
How to Prevent Wildlife Problems
Here’s a checklist you can do yourself:
- Use garbage and compost bins with tight lids, and put them out the morning of pickup.
- Take down bird feeders at night and clean up spilled seed.
- Feed pets indoors and bring in their food and water at night.
- Trim branches that reach the roof.
- Cap chimneys and cover roof vents with heavy metal screens.
- Repair soffits, fascia and damaged roof edges.
- Close off the space under decks, sheds and porches with sturdy, buried wire mesh.
- Seal gaps in siding, stucco and trim.
- Keep wood piles and brush away from the house.
- Check your roofline each spring and fall.
- Don’t feed wildlife, and ask your neighbours not to.
Can You Get Rid of Wildlife Yourself?
Sometimes, if an animal is only visiting. Remove the food, secure the garbage and take down feeders for a while. That often does it.
An animal living in or under your home is different. Skunks spray, raccoons and porcupines can hurt you or your pet, bats are protected, and a mother will defend her young. Rules on trapping and handling wildlife in Alberta are strict. Sealing a hole with animals still inside can trap them, and it won’t solve the problem.
Call a professional if:
- You hear noises in the attic, chimney or walls.
- An animal is living under a deck, shed, porch or steps.
- You think there may be babies.
- You’ve found droppings, chewed wires or torn insulation.
- You smell skunk and can’t find where it is.
- Bats are roosting on or in your home.
- Your pet has been sprayed, quilled or bitten.
- You don’t know what the animal is.
- It keeps coming back after you’ve removed the food.
Our Wildlife Control Process
- Inspect and identify. We confirm which animal it is and find where it’s getting in, where it’s denning and the route it takes.
- Remove. We remove the animals safely and humanely. We check for babies first so none are left behind.
- Seal and repair. We close off entry points, cap vents and chimneys, and repair damaged soffits and roof edges.
- Clean up. We tell you what needs cleaning, such as droppings and soiled insulation, and how to stay safe.
- Prevent. We show you what drew the animals in, such as food, trees and fences, and what to change.
- Follow up and guarantee. You’ll know what we found, what we did and what to do next. If animals come back through our repairs, we return at no extra cost.

FAQs About Major Pest Control Services
Sounds and the time of day can help. Fast scampering in the morning is often a squirrel, heavy thumping at night is more often a raccoon, and faint squeaking near the roofline at dusk can be bats. Skunks and porcupines usually stay under decks and sheds. Send us photos or a video, and we’ll identify it.
Start by removing what attracts them: lock garbage and compost lids, take down feeders at night and feed pets indoors. If an animal is already in your attic, chimney, walls or under a deck, it needs professional removal. Never seal a hole until you know nothing is inside, especially in spring and summer, when babies may be there.
We aim to remove animals safely and humanely, and we check for babies first. The method depends on the animal and the time of year. Bats, for example, are protected, so we time removal carefully. We’ll explain the plan before we start.
Removing the animal is only half the job. We seal the entry points and repair the damage, such as soffits, vents, roof edges and gaps under decks and sheds. You can help by securing garbage, trimming branches away from the roof and not feeding wildlife. If animals return through our repairs, we come back at no extra cost.
Wildlife control at Major Pest Control final price depends on the animal, where it is, how many there are, whether there are babies and how much repair work is needed. Get a free quote for an exact number.
