Signs You Have Bats
Bats are quiet and tidy, so the clues are easy to miss. Here’s what to watch for:
- Droppings under soffits, on decks, or on window ledges
- Dark rub marks or staining around small gaps
- Squeaking or scratching in the attic at dusk and dawn
- Bats flying out of the same spot at sunset
- A musty, sharp smell in the attic or walls
- A bat inside the living space
Quick check: Bat droppings crumble to a dry powder when pressed. Mouse droppings stay hard.
Where Bats Get Into Your Home
Bats only need a gap about 1 cm wide. These are the spots we find them most often:
- Soffits and fascia gaps
- Loose siding and corner trim
- Attic vents and roof edges
- Chimney caps and fireplace vents
- Covered porches and sunrooms
- Parkade doors and overhangs on multi-unit buildings
- Cabin and acreage outbuildings
Bat Season and the Law in Alberta
Bats are protected wildlife, so we can’t poison or trap them.
Females gather in warm attics in early summer to raise their pups. The pups can’t fly until about mid-August. Sealing a roost too early traps them inside, so timing matters. We plan every job around that. If you’ve spotted bats in spring or early summer, call now so we can inspect and book the right window.
Are Bats Dangerous?
Bats aren’t aggressive, but a roost in your home still causes problems.
- Droppings: They build up in insulation and can carry a fungus that causes lung illness.
- Smell and stains: Urine soaks into drywall and ceilings.
- Rabies: The risk is low, but never handle a bat with bare hands.
If a bat was in a room with someone sleeping, a child, or a pet, call Health Link at 811 or your doctor. If you can, close the door and keep the bat in the room.
Keep Bats Out for Good
Bats return to the same roost every year, so sealing it properly is key. Between visits:
- Fix loose siding, trim and soffit panels.
- Cap chimneys and vents with screens.
- Replace worn weatherstripping on attic doors and windows.
- Trim branches touching the roofline.
- Check your roofline each spring.
Please skip DIY sealing in summer. Closing a gap with bats inside can trap them in your walls.
Our Service Areas for Bat Control
Bats roosting in attics, soffits, and wall gaps can leave droppings and noise behind, and our local team handles them humanely and seals the entry points so they can’t return. We offer bat control in Edmonton for homes with scratching or squeaking in the attic, bat control in Calgary for roofline and soffit gaps where bats slip inside, and bat control in Red Deer for properties with droppings or bats roosting in the eaves.

FAQs About Major Pest Control Services
The price depends on your home’s size, how many entry points there are, and how hard the roofline is to reach. We give you a clear quote after the inspection, so there are no surprises.
Not safely. Bats are protected in Alberta, and sealing the wrong gap at the wrong time can trap them inside. A professional exclusion removes them humanely and closes every entry point.
Late summer, once the pups can fly, is the safest window for a full exclusion. If you’re hearing bats in spring or early summer, call us anyway. We can inspect now and plan the right timing.
Bats return to the same roost year after year, so we close all gaps with bat-proof materials and check the work afterward.
Stay calm, close the room door, and open a window if you can. Don’t touch it. If anyone was sleeping in the room, call Health Link at 811. Then call us to find out how it got in.
