Signs You Have a Tick Problem

Ticks are easy to miss until one is already on you or your pet. Look for:

  • A tick attached to your skin, often on your scalp, behind your ears, in your armpits, or at your waistband.
  • Ticks on your dog or cat after a walk or time in the yard.
  • Several ticks found in a short time, which points to a hot spot on your property.
  • Ticks on pet bedding, a doorstep or a dog’s resting spot.
  • Tall grass, brush or woodpiles next to a play area or patio.
  • Itchy bites and no sign of the pest. This can be bed bugs or fleas, not ticks.

Where Do Ticks Live and Hide?

Ticks don’t jump or fly. They climb up and wait for something to brush past.

  • Tall grass and weedy field edges.
  • Treed areas, shaded brush and shrubs.
  • Leaf litter and woodpiles.
  • Fence lines and acreage trails.
  • Under decks and sheds, especially where mice, squirrels or deer pass through.
  • Dog runs and pet resting spots.
  • Rarely, inside the home on pets, clothing and bedding.

How Fast Do Ticks Multiply?

Slower than most pests, but a single female can lay thousands of eggs. Here’s the cycle:

  • Spring: Adult ticks wake up and wait on grass and brush for a host. Activity peaks from April to July.
  • Summer: Females feed, drop off and lay thousands of eggs in sheltered spots.
  • Late summer: Eggs hatch into tiny larvae that feed on small animals like mice.
  • Next year and after: Larvae grow into nymphs, then adults. It can take one to two years or more to complete the cycle.

That’s why one tick in the yard often means more nearby.

Why Do I Have Ticks?

Ticks come for the host animals around your property. Here’s what we see most often in Alberta yards:

  • Tall grass and brush along fences and tree lines.
  • Mice, squirrels, birds and deer passing through.
  • Woodpiles, leaf litter and shaded corners that stay damp.
  • Acreages and homes backing onto green space or a field.
  • Pets that go in and out without tick prevention.
  • Gaps and sheds that let rodents nest close to the house.

How Worried Should I Be About Ticks?

Most Alberta ticks are harmless, but a bite is still worth taking seriously.

  • Health: Blacklegged ticks can carry Lyme disease. They are less common here, but they do turn up. Tick paralysis is rare but serious, mostly in kids and pets. If a rash, fever or flu-like symptoms appear after a bite, see a doctor.
  • Pets: Ticks can make dogs and cats sick and are hard to spot in thick fur.
  • How fast it escalates: Slowly, but numbers stay high in spring until you treat the hot spots.

Found a tick on you? Use fine-tipped tweezers. Grip close to the skin and pull straight out. Clean the bite and keep the tick in a sealed container or take a photo.

How to Prevent Ticks

Here’s a checklist you can do yourself:

  • Mow often and trim brush, especially near play areas.
  • Keep a clear strip between your lawn and any wooded edge.
  • Move woodpiles and bird feeders away from the house.
  • Clear leaf litter and tall weeds along fences.
  • Seal gaps that let mice and squirrels nest near the home.
  • Check kids, pets and yourself after time outdoors.
  • Keep pets on tick prevention as recommended by your vet.

Can You Get Rid of Ticks Yourself?

Not fully. Store-bought sprays can kill the ticks they hit, but they miss the hot spots where ticks wait and the animals that carry them in. Yard clean-up helps, but it won’t clear an area that’s already full of ticks.

Call a professional if:

  • You keep finding ticks in your yard.
  • Your pets keep bringing ticks inside.
  • You have an acreage, tall grass or a wooded edge.
  • Kids play in the affected area.
  • Someone has been bitten, and you’re worried.
  • You’re not sure if it’s ticks, fleas or bed bugs.

How Much Does Tick Control Cost?

The price depends on your yard or acreage size, how many hot spots there are, and how heavy the tick activity is. Tick treatment isn’t on our standard price list, so we quote each job after an inspection.

FAQs About Major Pest Control Services

How do I get rid of ticks in my yard?

Trim tall grass and brush, clear leaf litter and move woodpiles away from the house. For heavy tick activity, a professional treatment of the hot spots works best. Keep pets on tick prevention so they don’t bring ticks back in.

How much does tick control cost?

The price depends on your lot size, how many hot spots there are and whether it’s a yard or an acreage. We give you a clear quote after the inspection, so you know the cost before we treat.

When is tick season in Alberta?

Ticks are most active from spring to early summer, usually April to July. A few species can be active again in fall. Booking in spring helps you avoid the busiest weeks.

Can ticks live inside my house?

It’s rare. Most Alberta ticks live outdoors and only come inside on pets or clothing. If you keep getting bites and can’t find a tick, it may be bed bugs or fleas.

What should I do if I find a tick on me?

Remove it with fine-tipped tweezers, pulling straight out near the skin. Clean the area and keep the tick in a sealed container. If you get a rash, fever or feel unwell, see a doctor.
