Signs You Have a Flea Problem
Bites are often the first sign, before you ever see a flea. Look for:
- Itchy red bites, often in clusters or lines, mostly on ankles and lower legs.
- Tiny dark insects jumping from carpets, pet bedding, socks or pant legs.
- Pets scratching, chewing or licking more than usual.
- Black specks in pet bedding or carpet. This is flea dirt, and it smears reddish-brown when wet.
- Tiny white eggs or pale, worm-like larvae in pet bedding and carpet.
- Fleas on white socks after you walk across a carpet.
- Bites on one person while others in the home are fine.
Where Do Fleas Live and Hide?
Only a small share of fleas are on your pet. The eggs, larvae and pupae are in your home.
- Pet beds and the spots where pets sleep or rest.
- Carpets, rugs and under furniture.
- Couches, cushions and the edges of mattresses.
- Baseboards, floor cracks and stair edges.
- Bedding, especially if pets sleep on your bed.
- Shaded, sheltered spots where pets rest.
- Under decks, porches and sheds.
- Crawl spaces and dog kennels.
- Spots where wildlife or stray animals nest.
How Fast Do Fleas Multiply?
Faster than most people expect. Heated Alberta homes let fleas breed all year, even when it’s -30 outside. A female can lay dozens of eggs a day, and a full life cycle can take as little as three to four weeks. Here’s how it works:
- Egg: Eggs fall off your pet into carpets, bedding and cracks.
- Larva: Tiny worm-like larvae hide deep in carpet and bedding, away from light.
- Pupa: The larva spins a sticky cocoon. Pupae can stay dormant for weeks and hatch when they sense warmth and movement.
- Adult: The flea emerges, jumps onto a pet or person and starts feeding right away.
That’s why fleas seem to come back after you think they’re gone. We get the most flea calls in July and August.
Why Do I Have Fleas?
Fleas hitchhike in. They don’t mean your home is dirty. Even spotless homes get them. Here’s what we see most often in Alberta homes:
- A pet that picked them up. Kennels, groomers, daycares, dog parks and visiting pets are common sources.
- Pets that are already on flea medication. Most products work after a flea bites, so a few can still get in.
- A previous pet in the home. Dormant pupae can wait in carpet for months, then hatch when you move in.
- A tenant’s or relative’s pet that stayed in the home or brought fleas with them
- Wildlife and stray animals nesting under decks, sheds or in crawl spaces
- Second-hand furniture, rugs and mattresses
- Moving day. Pets, bedding and boxes can carry fleas into a new home.
How Worried Should I Be About Fleas?
Fleas are a real nuisance, and they’re hard to clear without treating the whole home.
Health: Flea bites itch and can become infected if you scratch them. Some people react strongly to them. Pets can develop skin allergies and pick up tapeworms from fleas. Heavy infestations can be dangerous for puppies and kittens.
Property damage: Fleas don’t damage your home, but they contaminate bedding, carpets and furniture.
How fast it escalates: Quickly. Eggs and larvae build up in the home while you’re treating the pet. The longer you wait, the more pupae are waiting to hatch.
How to Prevent Fleas
Here’s a checklist you can do yourself:
- Keep every pet on a vet-recommended flea prevention product, year-round.
- Wash pet bedding every week in hot water.
- Vacuum carpets, furniture, stairs and floor cracks often, then empty the vacuum outside.
- Comb pets with a flea comb, especially after the kennel, groomer or daycare.
- Check second-hand furniture, rugs and mattresses before bringing them in.
- Block access under decks, sheds and porches so wildlife and strays can’t nest there.
- Keep the yard tidy and clear out leaf piles in shaded areas.
- Treat all pets in the home at the same time.
Can You Get Rid of Fleas Yourself?
Sometimes, if you catch it early. Treat your pets with your vet, wash bedding on hot and vacuum carpets and furniture every day. Foggers and store-bought sprays rarely reach the eggs and pupae deep in carpet and under furniture, which is why fleas keep returning.
Call a professional if:
- You’re still getting bitten after treating your pets and cleaning.
- You find fleas in more than one room.
- You’ve sprayed, and they came back.
- You can’t tell if it’s fleas or bed bugs.
- Someone in the home has bites, and you can’t find the cause.
- Your yard, deck or crawl space may be the source.
- You rent out a property and a tenant’s pet was the source.
- You live in an apartment, condo or townhouse.
How Much Does Flea Control Cost?
Generally, our flea control price depends on how bad the infestation is, your home’s size, whether the yard or crawl space needs treatment, and how many follow-up visits you’ll need.

Our Flea Control Process
- Inspect and identify. We confirm it’s fleas, not bed bugs or another biting insect. We find where your pets rest and where larvae are collecting.
- Prepare. We tell you what to do before we arrive, like washing bedding, vacuuming, and how to handle your pets.
- Treat the home. We apply professional-grade products to carpets, baseboards, furniture edges, pet areas and cracks. We treat the yard or crawl space if it’s a source.
- Treat the source. Fleas return on untreated pets, so we ask you to treat your pets with your vet at the same time.
- Monitor and follow up. Pupae hatch over several weeks, so we check back and re-treat if needed.
- Report and guarantee. You’ll know what we found, what we did and what to do next. If fleas come back, we return and re-treat at no extra cost.

FAQs About Major Pest Control Services
Fleas are tiny, reddish-brown and jump. Bed bugs don’t jump and hide in mattress seams. Flea bites usually appear on ankles and lower legs, while bed bug bites often appear on arms, shoulders, and back. Black specks on bedding can be either, so an inspection is the surest way to tell.
Treat your pets with a vet-recommended product, wash bedding on hot and vacuum carpets, furniture and baseboards daily, then empty the vacuum outside. This clears many adults but not the eggs and pupae hiding deeper. If you still see fleas after a couple of weeks, you need professional treatment.
Most of a flea population, the eggs, larvae and pupae, lives in carpets, bedding and cracks, not on your pet. Pupae can stay dormant for weeks and hatch later, so it can look like fleas are coming back. Treating the pet alone won’t clear them. The home needs treatment too.
The final price for flea control at Major Pest Control depends on the severity of the infestation, your home’s size, whether the yard needs treatment, and how many follow-up visits you’ll need. Get a free quote for an exact number.
Your technician will explain every step before and after treatment, including how long to keep people and pets out and when it’s safe to vacuum. We apply products to carpets, baseboards and pet areas, not on food or food-contact surfaces. Follow those instructions closely.
