How Do You Know It Is a Bed Bug (Identification)
Colour
Reddish-brown. Darker after a blood meal. Young bed bugs are pale and almost see-through.
Size
Adults are 4–5 mm long, like an apple seed. Newly hatched nymphs are only about 1.5 mm.
Description
Flat, oval body with six legs and no wings. After feeding, the body swells, making it look longer and rounder.
Notes
Often mistaken for carpet beetles, fleas, or bat bugs. Bed bugs are the ones found along mattress seams and bed frames.

Signs You Have a Bed Bug Problem
I’ve checked many Edmonton apartments and homes where people were sure it was “just mosquito bites” or a few itchy nights. By the time they called us, the signs had usually been there for weeks. They just didn’t know what to look for. Keep an eye out for:
- Small rusty or red blood spots on sheets and pillowcases.
- Dark specks on mattress seams, as if someone dotted them with a marker (these are droppings).
- Shed skins that look like pale, empty bed bug shapes.
- Tiny white eggs or eggshells tucked into seams and cracks.
- A sweet, musty smell in the bedroom when the infestation is heavy.
- Itchy red bites in lines or clusters that show up after you sleep.
Where Do Bed Bugs Hide
Bed bugs don’t wander far from where people sleep. They stay close to their food source, you, which is why they’re so hard to spot. In Alberta homes, we find them most often in:
- Mattress seams, tags, and box springs.
- Bed frames and headboards.
- Sofas, chairs, and other upholstered furniture.
- Nightstands and dressers.
- Baseboards, wall cracks, and behind outlet covers or loose wallpaper.
Bed Bugs Don't Mean a Dirty Home. They Do Mean You Need a Fast Plan.
Bed bugs ride in on luggage, secondhand furniture, and visitors’ jackets, then settle in your mattress seams and start feeding at night. The longer they go unnoticed, the more rooms they reach, so act as soon as you suspect them.
Major Pest Control finds exactly where they’re hiding, treats those spots, and checks back to make sure they’re gone for good.

Bites, Stains or Something Else? How to Tell
Waking up itchy doesn’t automatically mean bed bugs. Here’s how they compare with the things people usually mistake them for:
Bed bugs
- Where you notice them: Bed, couch, seams
- Bite pattern: Lines or clusters on arms, neck, shoulders
- What you’ll find: Rusty spots, dark specks, shed skins
- When bites appear: Overnight
- Where you notice them: Pets, carpets, ankles
- Bite pattern: Scattered around ankles and legs
- What you’ll find: Flea dirt on pets and bedding
- When bites appear: Any time
- Where you notice them: Closets, window sills
- Bite pattern: Don’t bite; larvae can irritate skin
- What you’ll find: Shed larval skins, damaged fabric
- When bites appear: Rarely
- Where you notice them: Anywhere, mostly outdoors
- Bite pattern: Random, single bites
- What you’ll find: Nothing left behind
- When bites appear: Evening, outdoors
Not sure which one you’re dealing with? An inspection gives you a definite answer, and booking one doesn’t commit you to treatment.
Do a 10-Minute Bedroom Check Before You Call
You’re looking for live bugs, tiny white eggs, pale shed skins, and dark specks (droppings). One of these is enough to justify calling us. Use a flashlight and an old credit card:
- Strip the bed and check the mattress seams, piping and tags, especially near the head of the bed.
- Run the card along the seams to pull out anything hiding in the folds.
- Check the box spring underneath, including the fabric stapled to the bottom.
- Check the headboard and bed frame, especially for cracks, screw holes, and joints.
- Check nearby furniture, including nightstand drawers, couch seams and cushions.
- Look behind outlet covers and along the baseboards closest to where you sleep.
Why Bed Bugs Are So Hard to Get Rid of Yourself
Bed bugs can live for months without a meal, so waiting them out doesn’t work either. But most people try something on their own first, and some of it makes things worse:
- Bug bombs and foggers can push bed bugs deeper into walls and into neighbouring rooms.
- Washing the bedding kills the bugs on it, but not the ones in your mattress seams, frame and furniture.
- Moving to the couch or another room carries bed bugs with you and spreads the problem.
- Throwing out the mattress is expensive, usually unnecessary, and can spread bugs through the hallway and stairwell on the way out.
- Store-bought sprays rarely reach the cracks where bed bugs actually live, and can leave you with a smaller but still active infestation.
What Happens When You Book With Us
Step 1: Inspection
A technician inspects your sleeping areas, furniture, and surrounding cracks, confirms whether it’s bed bugs, and maps how far they’ve spread.
Step 2: Your Plan, Explained
You’ll hear what we found, what we recommend, and what it will involve before we start any treatment.
Step 3: Preparation
We’ll give you a clear prep list for your specific property. Prep makes a big difference to how well treatment works.
Step 4: Treatment
We treat the harbourage areas we found, and the spots bed bugs tend to move to next. The method depends on your property and the infestation level.
Step 5: Follow-Up and Final Check
Bed bug life cycles mean one visit rarely clears everything. We schedule a follow-up to confirm the problem is gone, and if bed bugs return, we’ll re-treat at no extra cost.
Living in an Apartment, Condo or Rental?
Bed bugs travel through shared walls, wiring and plumbing, so one unit’s problem often becomes the building’s problem. We also treat hotels, short-term rentals, offices and other commercial properties, and can work around your guests and business hours.
- Tenants: Tell your property manager or landlord as soon as you find signs, and avoid moving belongings to a neighbour’s or friend’s place.
- Landlords and property managers: We can inspect adjacent units, treat affected rooms, and provide a clear record of what we did.
- Condo boards: We can coordinate treatment across several units so bed bugs aren’t just pushed from one suite to the next.
Just Got Back From a Trip?
Most Alberta bed bug calls start with travel or secondhand furniture. A few habits make a big difference:
- Check the mattress seams and headboard before you unpack in a hotel.
- Keep your suitcase off the bed and floor, and use the luggage rack or bathtub.
- When you get home, unpack straight into the washer and dryer on high heat.
- Inspect any used mattress, couch or bed frame before bringing it inside.
- Use a zippered mattress and box spring encasement so bed bugs have fewer places to hide.
What Does Bed Bug Treatment Cost?
Pricing depends on the property size, how many rooms are affected, how severe the infestation is, and how many visits are needed. Standard services start at $695, but only a quote based on your situation can give you an accurate number.
